Here’s my Mini Packaging Checklist for premium & conscious brands. Having a mini checklist handy while you are developing your product and packaging is helpful to ensure that you have considered some of the essentials.
When it comes to your packaging, does it:
- Show your customer what's inside.
- Convey the value and quality of your product.
- Connect with your customer so they choose to purchase from you.
Packaging checklist for the Front of Pack
➊ Your brand logo
This is for brand recognition. You logo doesn’t always need to be large to make an impact though! Remember that your logo will be used alongside all your other brand elements (icons, illustrations, copy) to tell a cohesive story about your brand.
➋ Product title & description
This tells your customer what’s inside and what they can expect from the product. Use words for your product’s title that your ideal customer would resonate and would use as a search term if they were looking for your product on Google, rather than internal company jargon.
➌ Key message, point of difference
Draw attention to what your product does. This gives your customer a reason to purchase from your brand versus another than shares similar benefits or features such as "organic or ethical". These days, features aren't enough when it comes to product differentiation; it typically needs to go beyond this, bringing in your brand's point of difference.
➍ Volume, weight or serves
The net amount of product inside the packaging.
Back of pack - Space permitting!
➊ Key features, benefits
This may be represented in the form of a list or icons. It also gives the impression about the impact your product has on your customer/user and the results they can expect from it.
➋ How to use the product
Instructions, serving suggestions. Not necessary but good to have if your product needs to be used in a specific way for your customer to get the best results. For added information, you could always include a QR code, IG or link to recipe suggestions or support on how to use your product.
➌ Brand values or mission
Connect with your customer further by sharing something you both have in common. This may come in the form of a tagline or icons. It shows the customer what voting with their dollar is going towards when it comes to supporting your brand. It adds another level of emotional connection to your business.
➍ Business contact, support, socials
So your customer feels like they can always get in touch if required. This typically comes in the form of a social handle or website address.
